Can I remove a 1998 Nissan Altima Engine from the top?

I know that typically the KA24DE engine is removed along with the transmission from the bottom of the car. I only have one hoist and my jack/jackstands don't go very high to lift the car. I need to know if it's doable to take the engine and transmission out from the top. I have started this engine swap and today is the day I actually pull the engine. I just need to know before I go home from work today if I need to try to aqcuire another jack or hoist.

I have seen write-ups for the 240's where they take the engine and transmission out from the top, so shouldn't I be able to do the same with the Altima?

If it is an auto tranny, you can also remove the engine only from the top! Not as hard as it might look.

yes it can be done, but it is much harder, you have to disconnect the transmission from the axle/hub, which is much more tedious than to remove it from the bottom

Its doable, but much more difficult.

Save time=take it out from the bottom
save money=take it out from the top

as long as you have a engine load leveler attached between the engine and the hoist hook you should be able to tilt the assembly enough to remove from the top it does take more time and effort but its possible
